At the last PDC Microsoft unveiled Longhorn to the public, the AERO idea for making people love software and demoed the then current version of AERO called 'Glass'. This year, appears to be the year of Longhorn. While last time they spent considerable time going over what Longhorn would be capable of, there was little that you could take full advantage of at that time. This PDC, it’s different.

PDC03 Aero Glass
The AERO Glass demo at last PDC was entirely done in a Macromedia Director program, it was fake. It showed what they wanted to do but it wasn’t real. This year they’re doing an updated version of that demo, except real. The toys and abilities they’ll show will be available to everyone to play with.
The new components of AERO expected to be unveiled are; AERO Diamond (Vista Media Center), the Avalon XAML Draw application and the rebuilt Sidebar. While little of Diamond is likely to be shown or given to attendees certain portions of Diamond will probably be active, such as Phodeo. Phodeo is a new way to view and organize Pictures and Video within Vista using some of the new 3D capabilities of the OS. The Avalon Draw program is for 'drawing' Avalon and AERO interfaces.

As you can see, it has a listing of different ways you can organize the media in the Virtual Folder in such a way that you get one very detailed look and a descending look upon the rest of the media covered. Farther away from your selected filter, the further away it appears visually till it eventually disappears out of view.

While the new design has undoubtedly changed a bit since when this image was done, this is essentially how the new sidebar that is to be unveiled at this year’s PDC is expected to look.
Longhorn/Vista aside, there are several other important things going on at PDC. Such as Office 12 which will ship in the second half of 2006. While no new images of Office 12 have surfaced since they switched to the new interface style, there are several older images floating around which are linked at the bottom.
