Update: I have spoken with Lexmark about this problem and the cause of the problem was other wireless printers on my network. Once I disabled those printers I was unable to duplicate any of the problems. Lexmark says there is a software fix for this from Microsoft and they will be sending me that information so that I can share it with you guys.
Yesterday I got the Lexmark X4995 Professional, a wi-fi all in one printer, scanner copier. I will bring you guys and gals a full review on it in a week or two, but I just had to bitch about the software and set up process now.
First unless you have a WPS enabled router you can’t install the printer onto your network with out connecting it to a computer first, this kind of defeats the purpose of it being wireless but with more WPS enabled routers being made every day that will become a non issue.
However the included software, even if you don’t install the majority of the add-on software, it takes forever to nstall.
I literally sat 33 minutes waiting for the software to install. Keep in mind I also didn’t check to have any additional software installed so what took 33 minutes was literally the minimum I could install. Why did it take so long? I have no freaken idea.
The system I installed it on has 4 gigs of ram and a quad core AMD processor, so it is a powerful machine. I installed Norton Anti Virus in less than a minute on this machine yet it took 33 minutes to install the Lexmark Software, totally unacceptable. It didn’t even take me 5 minutes to install the Epson Artisan 800 printer software or the NX400 software or the HP C8180 Software.
What made matters worst is, if you install it the Lexmark software on a 64bit machine you run into even more problems, on two seperate 64 bit Vista machines I was able to duplicate the same problem, where some programs would no longer load and I could not access the control panel on my system after the Lexmark software was installed. I tested this on two separate 64 bit machines, however the problem does go away if UAC is disabled, and the problem is non existent on 32 bit Vista machines with UAC enabled.
So Lexmark WTF? Why does it take 33 minutes to install your software? It’s just a printer.

I have a lexmark printer, not the one you have but I have to agree the software install did take a long time.
I don’t have a vista 64 machine but that sucks that it kind of messed with your computer.

Watch out with the software on a Vista system. I sent my Lexmark printer back to the store where I purchased it after figuring out that the Lexmark software was interfering with Internet Explorer (IE was constantly failing). I took the software off of 3 laptops and I’m not having any further problems with IE. Also, watch out for all the spyware which loads with their software. I will never buy another Lexmark printer again!

Oops, I forgot to mention that my WiFi printer was the z2420 not the all-in-one. Nonetheless, it seems that problems abound regarding Windows systems and Lexmark software.

I used to use Lexmark printers but switched to Epson after my printers kept breaking down for absolutely no reason. Epsons do gobble the ink, but the quality is great and best of all, they’re reliable.
