Has anyone bothered to look at the 3G coverage map for at&t? If you have you probably noticed that the 3G coverage area is rather small. In fact the 3G coverage area for at&t is so small, that unless you live in a Major City the chances of you benefiting from 3G is minimal.
So why has at&t and Apple been promoting the benefits across the country and telling people to get the new iPhone because it supports 3G, when for the majority of the US population there will be no added speed increase since the at&t network is mostly edge?
I am not ripping the iPhone here I personally would like one and think it’s a great phone, I just think that at&t and Apple need to be clear about the size of at&t’s 3G coverage area.
In a Press release today Apple said “The new iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G networking that is twice as fast”
No where did it say that 3G isn’t available to the majority of the US.
at&t also released a press release today about the 3G, they claim to have the fastest 3G network in the US, but hey didn’t they also claim to have the fewest dropped calls and that turned out to be a false claim?
My recommendation to all who want an iPhone 3G and already have an iPhone, check the at&t coverage map to see if 3G is available in your area and if it isn’t stick with what you have.
Also to get a new iPhone at the cheaper pricing you need to extend your contract and you must be due for an upgrade if you already have a contract, if not you have to pay full price for the iPhone, according to at&t.
So what the Fuck at&t and Apple why haven’t you been clear on the 3G coverage?

Yup first thing I’ll turn off on my iPhone 3G is 3G support. Suddenly I have an iphone running on the 2.5 network that has a huge battery life. YAY!

Doesn’t that apply to anyone looking to change service providers? I don’t have 3G service in my town (Champaign-Urbana) but it is in the areas I travel to in state. Chicago, Springfield, Decatur, Bloomington, etc. You are correct that 3G coverage in general in the US is poor. Of course that bitch Steve has it where he lives . . . not that I’m bitter about it.

It does apply, a lot of companies need to specify imo that the 3g service is limited to certain areas. But I haven’t seen such a push pimping 3g to customers with the exception of for the iPhone.

I don’t get it. If 3G was not available in most places in the US and the only major GSM competitor in the US (T-Mobile) does not have any 3G service, why was everyone bitching about the lack of 3G on the original iPhone and it being locked to AT&T;? Did most people not understand that Sprint and Verizon were using CDMA instead of GSM and that the rest of the world (except Canada and the US) used GSM exclusively?
on Fri, Jul 11th, 2008 at 01:35 PM
Because the ones bitching were that tiny minority that is always more vocal then the majority.
People were more upset and at the fact that itwas on at&t;and not verzon or sprint, and they just used the lack of 3G support as the reason they were upst IMO anyway.
BTW tmo has 3G up and running in some places.

Got my iPhone from Fido about 50 minutes ago. Woot. They were able to activated it on the first try.

Steve and I are going to wait until the activation bugs are worked out. Looks like Apple pulled the 2.0 update due to issues as well.

What does 3G mean anyway? like I know its mobile internet but what does it mean?
Michael on Sun, Jul 13th, 2008 at 04:18 PM
It just means 3rd generation technology.
BTW a lot of people are complaining they have weaker signals with 3G then with Edge.
on Sun, Jul 13th, 2008 at 04:22 PM
And I’ve heard the opposite. That where they couldn’t signal before they can now. I’m sure it’s a case of YMMV
on Sun, Jul 13th, 2008 at 05:01 PM
I think your mileage may vary because the 3G and 2G networks are not just different network types but can be on different towers so you could be in an area where 2G coverage was poor but you just happened to be close to a 3G tower or the opposite.

I am dumping my fucken iPhone 3G for my first gen iPhone. The battery life sucks and my fucken signal is wack. Im fucken pissed that apple is going to charge me 10% restocking fee on this piece of crap.
on Wed, Jul 16th, 2008 at 11:52 AM
If you signal is wack and your battery time is not what you expected, did you you try turning off 3G to conserve battery power and default to the 2G cell towers?
According to reviews on the net, the iPhone’s 3G talk time is above average for 3G handsets in 3G mode.
To turn off 3G, tap on Settings, tap on General, tap on Network and toggle Enable 3G to Off.
