I recently updated my CPU and Motherboard and the entire process went well. After booting up Vista installed the needed drivers and I was back up and running in a matter of 5 minutes.

However when I tried to play music or a video, Windows Media Player would now lock up, I would then get an error that said “Media sharing is currently disabled, either because the service is not running or your firewall settings have changed.”

I couldn’t figure out what was wrong and for two days I did everything I could think of to fix the problem. I even updated my copy of Vista to Vista Sp2 (beta) but that did not fix the problem either.

Solutions for the same problem on Windows XP called for the re-installation of Windows Media Player. But there is no way for you to reinstall Windows Media Player or perform a Repair on Windows Media Player in Vista.

So I did some more digging, and I kind of got the impression that it had to deal with DRM. The reason I began to think this was because in other players that I had used in the past to play DRM’ed music and Videos they no longer worked.

I then googled and found a solution, I needed to manually reset my DRM by simply renaming the DRM folder to DRMBackup and opening Windows Media Player again and allowing it to recreate the DRM folder. Once Windows Media Player did this everything worked.

If you are having this problem and want to try and see if manually resetting your DRM corrects the problem click here and follow Step 3.

But the question I have is What the F&*K? Microsoft how could you allow the RIAA and MPAA to dictate how your OS works, and not provide a solution for what is a very common problem? People change their hardware all the time, just because a motherboard changes and or a CPU changes it doesn’t mean a person no longer owns the rights to play music and movies.

Shame on you Microsoft, and you wonder why so many people are starting to shy away from your products.

If you have installed a new CPU, Media Player 11 (and other players that are dependent on DRM such as winamp) will crash.

This is due to DRM, even if you don’t use copy protected music or video, it’ll still crash. Thats just the Micro$oft way i’m afraid.

To fix (on Vista),

you need to show hidden and system files/folders in your control panel.

Then go to (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM\Cache\) and delete what ever is in there.

Then open media player, it should run sweet now.

If not, it is something else causing your media player to crash.
