HardwareGeeks.com along with Ask The Admin and Absolute Windows are giving away 3 (1 on each site) dx9000 TouchSmart PCs provided by HP.

All you have to do is create an application that will work on the dx9000 or other TouchSmart PC’s from HP.  The application can be of anything, I personally would like to see an app designed for hospitals where you can pull up a patients chart and view their files and even x-rays and are able to zoom in and out using your fingers. But your application does not have to do that, it can do anything.

It can be like the Time 100 Application for the TouchSmart, or something similar to what is set up at O’Hare airport in Chicago. Just create something useful and fun and have fun doing it.

Click here for the Developers Guidelines for the TouchSmart systems.

If you do not own a dx9000 or a TouchSmart PC do not worry, HP has partnered with Micro Center to allow you to test your application on the TouchSmart PC’s they have on Display on Sun., Aug. 16 and Sun., Sept. 20. I am even thinking about dropping by the Long Island Micro Center here in NY on the 16th of August just to see who shows up there to test their Apps out.

The rules are simple, impress me. If I like your App you get the dx9000. If not it really isn’t the end of the world as two other sites are giving one away and your App may impress them.

How to enter? Well easy just submit your App to me Michael (A) hardwaregeeks.com and I’ll judge it, entries must be received by October 3rd 2009.
Just note if you win one of the other two dx9000 systems you won’t win ours. The other two sites are AbsoluteVista.com and AsktheAdmin.com.

Good Luck and Happy Coding!

Just a note the dx9000 starts at $1499 USD.

I am learning to code, but I am not close to being good. Would try but I think I shall pass.

Only two days to test, that is kind of dumb. Is there an emulator?

Ryan Hoffman on Tue, Jun 30th, 2009 at 03:52 AM

As a .NET developer who could compete in this competition, I really don’t understand how HP expects us to develop a solution with only two days near the end of the contest to test.  Debugging code on the touch hardware is essential for even basic development.  Can I use the machine ALL day at Micro Center just for myself?  Will I be able to install Visual Studio on it?  I might need to sit there and tweak one line of code for 20 minutes.  Who knows.

Does this machine support multi-touch?  Will we be using Windows Vista or Windows 7?  If it supports mutli-touch, I hope we are using Windows 7, as it includes a multi-touch api.  What operating system will the machine be running?

Lastly, HP, the development guidelines document is a joke.  You really think that it’s okay to have an MSI installer for a PDF file?  Please someone change that website to only distribute the PDF file without that dumb MSI installer.  What are you guys thinking??

haha I thought I downloaded the wrong thing. When it said guide lines I expected a word doc not an executable.

The test period is too close to the deadline, also why just two days?

VeraBlue on Tue, Jun 30th, 2009 at 04:45 AM

The best solution for this would be to write it in C# using .NET 3.5 along with whatever APIs HP has to offer. It would still take a substantial amount of time. 50 hours at minimum to create something remotely interesting.  Luckily I already have a prewritten app that I can rework in about 10 hours, I’d still have to redesign the sub system and remove 1/3 of the code but meh, that’s not too bad.

HP Has told me that you will have 20 minutes to use the machine at Micro center but if no one is there then you can keep using it.

They also said they are unsure if Visual Studio will be on the machines but are checking.

I complained to 3 people at HP and 1 at their PR firm about the MSI to install a PDF they are looking into it.

What are the complete specs on the system?

Doesn’t seem worth it for a 1400 dollar system but I may get board. Does HP keep the rights to the winning application?

I might try.

HP has said what ever app you make you keep they will not request or want any rights to your app.

They also said that it can be a pay app or a free app it’s up to you the developer.

Maybe I need to try this before I can judge. But I believe HP is good. I hope it works for me.
