Last year Symantec blew our minds, with the release of Norton Internet Security 2009, not only did it install in under a minute and in some cases under 45 seconds, it also had a high accurate detection rate for virus, and it wasn’t as CPU intensive and as much of a memory hog as previous versions.

While the 2009 product is amazing, there is still room for improvement and after playing with NIS 2009 it’s hard to see what they can improve upon. But there are little things that I noticed that need improvement, and one would hope that Symantec knows it needs to improve.

But often times companies are satisfied with what they have done and do little to improve upon it. After all that is in my opinion what happened to Symantec in the past, they got comfortable with what they had and instead of improving it, instead they added more to it, and there came a time when there was so much to the program it didn’t do what it was supposed to do effectively.

I personally really feared that Symantec would go back to it’s old ways, and in a few years we would have a profuct that isn’t useable.

But during CES I had dinner with Symantecs Senior Vice President of Consumer products Rowan Trollope. Over dinner we spoke about Symantec Past and Symantec Present. He told me about how he read, I don’t recall the name but I believe it was about Steve Jobs. (Someone from Symantec correct me if I’m wrong) He said the book made him realize that sometimes you have to want the impossible, so when he became the Senior VP of Symantec he demanded the impossible.

I paraphrase because I don’t recall exactly what was said but he basically he said, he gave his engineers and programmers unrealistic goals, and told them if they met those goals he would make them dinner, and eventually he made them all dinner.

We then talked about what’s next, and he pretty much said what I was hoping he would say. He said that Symantec needs to improve on their 2009 product because there is always room for improvement. I really hope he meant that and I think he did, because he was very passionate about the product.

I truly hope Symantec keeps with what they are doing and that the 2010 product and beyond gets better and better each year.
