For those who know me personally, I have the worst sense of direction. It is so bad, I get lost in my own neighborhood. I have to actually walk a tad bit slower than other people just to make sure I am headed in the right direction.
Because of my horrible sense of direction, I have become dependent on GPS units, be it on my cell phone or on the dash of my car.
So when V7 asked if I would be interested in testing out their NAV 740, I said sure why not. I had been testing an HP GPS unit for nearly 2 months, and it would be nice to compare that to something else.
The Nav740 is featured pack, and when I read the feature list and saw the price tag, I had to find out if the $299 USD price tag was a typo.
The Unit features text to speech, built in Multimedia player for music and video, SD HC compatible up to 16 GB, and over 11 million points of interest (most GPS come with less than a 6 million). It also has Traffic Upgradeable and optimized for best path, be it the shortest or fastest, 64 Mb of onboard Flash memory, and a 4.3 color touch screen. That’s a lot of features for a GPS unit with a sub $300 price tag, and I didn’t even list them all. Heck most of the features listed can only be found on devices costing over $500.
But enough about the features. Does it perform well? Yup.
The NAV740 is probably the fastest GPS I have ever used. It picks up the Sat signal faster than my Cell phone, HP iPaq GPS unit I am testing, and the Tom-tom my sister has.
I often found myself waiting up to 5 minutes for the GPS to pick up a signal, but that wasn’t a problem at all with the 740.
It also found routes faster than other GPS units I have used. I guess that Samsung 2440 processor it has is a lot more powerful than I thought. It only took it 45 seconds to plan a route from NY to Vegas. That’s how fast it is, and unlike other GPS units, it didn’t seem to get sluggish when zooming in and out on maps.
I was also able to find points of interest fast, and the entire device was easy to Navigate. I never found myself lost within the device; I always knew where I was, how I got to the area I was in, and how to get back. Navigation on other GPS devices isn’t as clean and straight forward as the navigation on the 740.
Overall it’s a great GPS Unit, and we recommend it to everyone. If you are on the search for a feature filled unit without the price tag, then the NAV740 from V7 is for you.
We award it our 5 Star Must Have Award.

The Nav740 is also available at Newegg for $229.

You should check this one out then, I liked it and it performed better than the HP iPaq GPS unit I have.

LOL. Reading this post, I remember my old friend Rachelle, who could use something like this. She doesn’t go to a mall alone; she can’t figure the way out. If her house is not 20 meters away from the highway, she would probably get lost going home, too.
