A few weeks ago Seagate sent me their new Dockstar, a dock for your FreeAgent Go drives that allowed you to put them onto your network essentially turning them into a NAS.

The idea of it made me smile, the idea of being able to plop my drive in a dock and access it from any system and even remotely made me giggle like a school girl. You guys have no idea how many times I have put data on a portable drive and actually forgot to take the drive with me. So I know some of you may be saying “Whats the point of making it remotely accessible if its a portable drive?” well for the many times I personally left my portable drive at home.

Setting up the Dockstar on your network was as easy as plugging it in. Once you set it up on your network all you do is locate it on your network. If you are running Windows 7 or Windows Vista it will show up in your network map.

You can then create a Network Drive in your “computer” folder. If you are using Vista or Windows 7 just click “Map Network Drive” in your “Computer” folder.

Thats it, that is all you need to do and you have a working NAS.

The dockstar works with more than just FreeAgent Go drives, you can connect any HDD to the dockstar via 1 of its three USB ports. I tried to connect a USB Hub to the dockstar to add more and at first it did not work. Seagate then contacted me and we resolved the issue. Turns out that my Hub wasn’t working properly. I tried it with another USB Hub and it worked perfectly.

Overall the Dockstar is pretty cool and if you own a Seagate FreeAgent drive then its a definite must have. For more information visit http://www.seagate.com
