I will start this review off by saying, I am a huge couch potato. I have had several remotes on my coffee table in the past 2 years, and I needed a solution.

So during CES, when Logitech showed off the new Harmony One, I begged my contact at Logitech to send me one, and for the past month and a half that I have had the remote, I am happy with it. If she hadn’t sent me one, I would of gladly bought one.

The Harmony One is a great looking remote. It has a full color touch screen display which allows you to browse various activities. It also allows you to view uncommon buttons your remote may have for a particular device.  Navigating through the various screens on the touch screen is very easy. A gentle tap left or right will get you where you want to go.

Logitech Harmony OneLogitech, in a briefing, told me that they tried to design the remote so that it would have buttons on it that you normally use on a remote that comes with your television or cable box. I am happy to say they have done a great job and have accomplished this.

The remote was easy to learn and use once I held it. It was like I have been using it my entire life, because without even looking, I knew where the buttons were. This made it very easy to use.

Unlike most Universal Remotes that you buy at Circuit City and Best Buy, the Logitech Harmony requires that it be programmed by a computer. While that may sound complicated, it really isn’t.

You simply install the included software and connect the remote to a USB port. Then use the software to tell the remote what TV, sound system, game console, and dvd player you have. You then tell it how each device interacts with each other, and once you do that (took me about 10 minutes), you just sit in front of your TV and power it up.

The remote will display various activities on the color touch screen, such as “Watch TV” or “Play a Video Game”. Tapping on either one of these activities will automatically turn your TV on and set it to the right input. So, you really have to do nothing but sit back and watch TV or play a video game.

The Harmony One Kicks remote butt, and for that, we award it our 5 Star Kick Ass award, because it is truly the only remote you will ever need.

Even though it comes with a $250 USD price tag, it is worth every penny, because not only does it get rid of the clutter on your coffee table, it is easy to use and has a small learning curve.

The Harmony One is available at Newegg.com for $249.99.

Does it do RF and IR?

It does both, depending on the model of the device you are using.

Example my TV does RF but the Media Center PC does IR.

It will actually control both, it may take a little longer to control multiple devices i say about 5 secs but it gets it all done, a lot faster than putting one remote down and picking another up.
