The Leapfrog Tag is the third Educational Product we here at HardwareGeeks.com have reviewed in the past year and the second Leapfrog product.

The first Leapfrog product was the Fly Fusion Pentop computer, which we loved by the way. This new Leapfrog product we bring to you today is the Leapfrog tag. The Leapfrog tag is similar to the Fly Fusion, as it looks like a pen, but it isn’t a pen. It’s more of a pointer, a cool pointer.

Leapfrog TagThe Tag is a reading tool, and it’s geared to kids age 4 – 8. The Tag will basically read the entire book to your child, page by page.

Or they can read it themselves, and if they come across a word they cannot pronounce, they tap on it with the tag, and it will pronounce it for them.

Each page has mini games on them that progressively get harder depending on the level they are on. The books also have pictures that if taped on will make a sound, or if it’s a character in the story, it will tell you what they are thinking. The games and the ability to tap on the pictures to hear more of the story adds a bit more fun to the entire learning process.

I let my 6 year old nephew play around with the Tag and the Ozzie and Mack book, and he was cracking up the entire time. He loved it, and I think he even learned a few new words.

I personally loved it. I honestly can’t wait to get more books, so I can play with it some more. I know it’s for kids 4 to 8, but hey maybe it should be for kids 4 to 28, because I had a lot of fun with it too.

Overall the Leapfrog tag is a great educational tool, and when your kids are in school it is a great toy to play with and get your mind off the stress of your daily life.

We here at HardwareGeeks.com recommend the Leapfrog tag to everyone who has young kids, as it will help them improve their reading and vocabulary skills.

The Leapfrog tag will be available this summer (2008).

This sounds fun. I have the fly fusion it helped me with math a lot, I don’t know if I can use the tag but my little sister probably can.

Michael on Tue, Mar 04th, 2008 at 10:44 AM

man this thing was fun, I entertain my self with it from time to time.

When you put your pen on a character that doesn’t even have a line in the book and there is something funny that comes out of the character’s mouth, it’s a kick,

Suzyque on Tue, Jul 08th, 2008 at 11:46 PM

long face Extremely LIMITED product - Only holds 5 books at a time - you must REMOVE items from its Memory before adding more.  Was not designed well.  If you buy more than 5 books -they punish you by making remove some books before adding others.

Michael on Wed, Jul 09th, 2008 at 07:45 PM

wow I didn’t know you were limited to just 5 books on the pen, I knew the memory was not expandable but I thought it could hold more.

:(

Kind of sucks to know.

Matt on Sat, Jul 12th, 2008 at 05:14 PM

It can hold 5 at a time. It’s an easy process to load, remove and reload books. The only limitation would be on a trip where more than 5 books might be used. But a laptop solves that!

Michael on Sat, Jul 12th, 2008 at 06:18 PM

How is the software for it? The review unit I have did not come with software.

MaryJoe on Sat, Feb 28th, 2009 at 06:03 PM

I bought this for my daughter who is nearly five, she loves it! I didn`t realise how much she was using it at bedtime until she read one of the books with very little help from the Tag Pen. Although she is advanced at reading this is such a fun way to encourage reading.
The only fault would have to be it only holds 5 books! As she also just falls asleep listening to the Tag Pen she didn`t appreciate me removing one of her stories to put another on there.

Michael on Sat, Feb 28th, 2009 at 09:31 PM

Which book is her favorite?

MaryJoe on Sun, Mar 01st, 2009 at 05:11 AM

I would say The Cat in The Hat, which is great as I introduced the Dr Suess early reader books to her ( green back ), she is reading them really well.
To be honest she has 7 Tag books and I would say her least favourite is paddington Bear!

Michael on Sun, Mar 01st, 2009 at 01:10 PM

How does she not like Paddington Bear?

I use to always want to dress like him in the Red hat and blue coat. But yeah I’ll admit his stories were a bit dull.

MaryJoe on Sun, Mar 01st, 2009 at 05:50 PM

Not sure why really, she does listen to it with the pen, just not a favourite. She is excited that Madagascar 2 Tag book is out. Guess that will be on her birthday list.

Suzyque on Mon, Mar 02nd, 2009 at 09:07 AM

Found out there is an Education version.  It will hold ALL of the books.  It’s orange - donated the silly green thing to charity.  It’s only $20 more and well worth buying on line.

MaryJoe on Mon, Mar 02nd, 2009 at 12:45 PM

That’s great! what web site? Do they take orders from uk?

Michael on Mon, Mar 02nd, 2009 at 04:34 PM

The only other item similar to this that I know Leapfrog makes, is the Pentop Computer. But I am not sure if it works with Tag books or not.

SuzyQue on Mon, Mar 02nd, 2009 at 04:37 PM

Go to LeapFrogs site and look under the Teachers tab.  The Orange pen is nice because if you have multiple kids it will take multiple identitys and there are worksheets to follow up with.

MaryJoe on Mon, Mar 02nd, 2009 at 05:45 PM

Tried Leopfrog site but it doesn`t show delivery to uk! Have you ordered one from there?

Michael on Tue, Mar 03rd, 2009 at 10:54 AM

Cool didn’t know they sold the teachers version on the site. I’ll ask my contact at leapfrog if they sell it in the uk

MaryJoe on Wed, Mar 04th, 2009 at 06:36 PM

Hi I e-mailed Leopfrog.com they said at this time they are not delivering outside US! Looks like I will have to stick to the one I got!

This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I love seeing websites that understand the value of providing a quality resource for free. It’s the old what goes around comes around routine. Did you acquired lots of links and I see lots of trackbacks?
share your option

The tag sucks Im a tech and can’t seem to get this junior working and there are no other drivers for the stupid thing, just the leap frog connect. Seem on other sites im not the only one with this issue. Its a mp3 player why no drivers out there. If anyone can help please let me know. thank you

corey on Tue, Dec 29th, 2009 at 08:14 PM

OMG!  I’m with you Sean.  I can install software, but this one has made me so mad. I finally have th software installed and now the stupid pen won’t work.  Gives me ‘problem occured during hardware installation.’ Customer support is not technical and could not solve my problem.  Told me they would have to send me a new one, but it would take 10-15 days.  They said they would excalate me problem and I’ll get an email within 24hours from them.  I doubt it would be helpful.  You are right, can’t find any drivers besides they ones it comes with under the TagUSBDrivers folder where it installs.  My pen doesn’t show up in my device manager and I can’t seem to do anything with the drivers.  If you figure something out let me know.  I’ll do the same.  Good luck!

Okay, perhaps I’m a contrarian, but I find the whole Learning Path concept at LeapFrog down right creepy.  The information on what you have to purchase is not transparent when you get the device.  You cannot (as near as I can tell) obtain books without registering and setting up a “footprint” for your child.  The SW collects and uploads to a LeapFrog.com server “learning” data to inform you of your kid’s ‘progress’.  Sorry, but my intention was to provide something fun, not Big-Brothery, for my child.  I would be happy thank you very much to just get the audio (extra $) for the purchased physical book, and forego the entire ‘track-your-sprogs-progress-to-help-you-be-a-better-parent’ weirdness.  I’m perfectly capable of playing with my own kids and judging their ‘progress’ without the gating ‘help’ of an off-the-sheld software application.  Had this not been included under the Christmas tree by my un-suspecting better half, I would not have purchased it.  As it is, I may not use it beyond the first Tag-scribe-included-book.  Just. Creepy.
