This week I got my hands on a 8GB USB Flash drive from Kingston, their new HyperX DataTravler, and I must say it’s pretty cool.

For those of us who travel a lot, we find ourselves carrying around mini external hard drives that hold 120 GB of data, but we really only have 2 or 4 GB on it. I know this is the case in my situation, and it’s the case with LaIndia as well.

Carrying an external hard drive with only 2 to 4 GB of data on it kind of defeats the need for such a large drive, and for us there was an immediate benefit in having a USB flash drive with 8 GB of storage. It meant we could ditch the external hard drive in favor of the HyperX DataTravler.

Instead of having an extra pound or 2 of weight in our briefcase, we now just had an extra .5 ounces in our pocket.

But having 8GB of storage space that weighs .5 ounces isn’t the coolest thing about the HyperX Datatravler. I would have to say it’s how fast it is.

I recently had to backup my entire Documents folder. Windows Vista said it was 7.2 GB in size. I backed it up in the past to my OneTouch II Mini, and it took nearly 30 minutes connected to my USB 2.0 port. When I backed it up to the HyperX Datatravler, also connected to my USB 2.0 port, it took less than 2 minutes. I shit you not. I don’t know if it’s the improved Data Transfer Speed Windows Vista Sp1 has (I doubt it), or if the HyperX Datatravler is that fast (probably). It does advertise a read speed of 30 MB/sec and write speed of 20 MB/sec. But it sure as hell seemed a lot faster than that, maybe it was a combo of the improved transfer speed in Vista and the speed of the HyperX DataTravler.

When I saw that it was already done, at first I thought hmmm maybe I didn’t copy everything. So silly me went ahead and deleted everything off the DataTravler and transferred it all again. Again it copied everything over in less than 2 minutes.

The only downside in my opinion is the $200 USD price tag, but come to think of it, it is worth every single penny.

Overall the HyperX Datatravler is fantastic. It has fast read and write speeds, light weight, and looks cool too. For that, we award it our 5 Start Kick Ass award.

The HyperX DataTravler from Kingston is available exclusively from Amazon.com.

There is also a 2GB and a 4GB version.
