Paypal Cheif Information Security Officer Michael Barrett warns Paypals millions of users to avoid using Apples Safari browser, because it lacks two important anti-phishing features.
“Apple, unfortunately, is lagging behind what they need to do, to protect their customers,” Barrett said in an interview with infoworld. “Our recommendation at this point, to our customers, is use Internet Explorer 7 or 8 when it comes out, or Firefox 2 or Firefox 3, or indeed Opera.”
Safari which is the default browser for Apples OSX lacks a way to inform users of a suspicious website and offers no support for EV certificates.
EV Certificates basically tell a browser that a site is legitimate, and currently only IE 7 supports EV Certificates, but the next version of Firefox and Opera are also expected to support them. In a browser that supports EV certificates, when a user visits a website such as Paypal.com the address bar turns green, and shows a lock along with the companies name.
We e-mailed apple for comment but as of yet no reply.
