Symantec today launched their newest version of their Norton Online Backup solution and I have to say I am impressed. The last version I wasn’t a huge fan of. I thought it was slow and sometimes caused a slow down on my system.

I didn’t give it a good review and infact told people who were using the Norton 360 product to back up to an external hard drive and not use the online backup service that Symantec provided. But opinions change and mines has, the newest version is a major improvement and worth trying.

I personally have been using it for a week and the memory and CPU useage is way than from the previous product. I am not saying the previous version brought your system to a stand still but it wasn’t as kind with your computers resources as the 2.0 version is.

Another thing is, they have improved the way it scans for files on your system and doesn’t upload any unnecessary files. Although by default it does not back up your music, only emails, pictures and documents.

The largest upload I was able to test was 4.5 GB and with in 2 and a half hours I was able to upload it all to their servers, which is pretty impressive considering it took me nearly a day to upload half of that on their previous product. But I would like to see how well it handles a larger upload especially when there are hundres if not thousands of people using it in a live enviorment and not a staging area that I tested it in.

I tried it on both PC and Mac with the same result, low resources and a fast upload. Norton Online Backup 2.0 also has some pretty cool features such as being able to email any of your backed-up files. You basically email a link and then can download the file. It will also keep 90 days worth of saves of any of your files. So if you have a word document for example and you change it 1000 times. For 90 days you will hae 1000 different versions of that file.

You can even search through your backups, and easily remove backups you no longer want and this is all done via a website in fact the majority of the program is web based, so you will have a very tiny software foot print fromt he service on your computer itself. Which is pretty cool.

To try out Norton Online Backup 2.0 visit http://www.backup.com The service will cost you $49.99 a year with 25 GB of storage. You can however purchase more storage but at the moment I do not know the pricing of the additional storage.

My current solution for file storage and backup is Live Mesh, which continually monitors your machine for changes in backed-up files and automatically uploads them. While this feature is great, it can sometimes result in your machine slowing down since the application tends to use a lot of resources. Norton Online Backup’s client is fairly lightweight and works on a scheduled backup system, which means that it checks for changes in your backed-up files at a designated time and does everything at once. This results in less overhead for your system.
