A little over a year ago Symantec rocked my world with their 2009 product line, and since then it has been an uphill battle for me because I have been defending a product that many people hate.

I know NIS 2010 isn’t my product and I do not work for Symantec but when something as great as NIS 2010 comes around and you realize a lot of people can benefit from it, you want to fight for it and make sure those in need can take advantage of it. But even though Norton for the past year has had a great product it’s still hard to be taken seriously when you defend it.

But everyone should give Norton that second, third or fourth chance! No matter how many times you may have tried a Norton product in the past, no matter how bad of a taste their products may have left in your mouth try it again! It’s a completely reworked product and in my opinion the best security software on the market.

nisNorton 2010 protects you where no other product that I am aware of protects you, and that is in the unknown. That unknown area where new threats are born and no other products protects you in that unknown area because they don’t know what to protect you from.

Norton does this with what they call Quorum, a technology they developed that inspects a any file you encounter, compares it to what they have in their database and what it does on your system.

It will then give you a recommendation on what to do with the file if it feels the file is dangerous. Then it’s up to you to take their recommendation which probably would be to “remove” the file or “allow” the file. While Norton may think the file is suspicious it may not be so it ultimately leaves the decision to you.

It’s an all in one security solution that takes it to the next level, the unknown level.

But it doesn’t just protect you from the unknown it protects you from all the known viruses and all the websites that attempt to exploit your browsers.
In fact a study done by Carnegie Mellon University showed that after the first hour of browsing the web, Norton protected you better than any other solution available, and the reason for that is Norton Internet Security 2010 is protecting you from the unknown.

While Quorum in my opinion is probably the best part of Norton Internet Security 2010, there is one feature that deserves mention and if it weren’t for Quorum would be the best part of the suite. That feature is the System Insight Feature. Before I explain the feature look at the image below.

The system insight essentially gives you a history of everything you have downloaded, installed, what threats were detected and the last time you optimized your system. It even tells you what programs are using your system resources.

This is a great tool, it will help you determine easily which programs are eating away at your resources and possibly slowing you down. It can remind you of when you downloaded a program and installed it. A great tool for IT people to trouble shoot a problem.

Also wouldn’t you like to just uninstall a problematic piece of software than have to reinstall your OS, which is the solution a lot of people use. Plus if you learn to use the Norton System Insight you may even save yourself money because you won’t need to have someone else take a look at your system.

You may notice the Swoosh next to the word “home” and are wondering what it does. Just check the video below.

Pretty cool huh.

Overall Norton Internet Security 2010 is the best Internet Security software suite available on the market. I have used almost all of them from the beta of Microsoft Essentials which is free, to McAfee 2010 which is really the 2009 product reboxed, they do not compare.

The Norton 2010 product line is go good we have awarded it our best Software Product of 2010 and our 5 Star Gold Editors Choice award.

I gave it a shot last year because of you and I have no regrets.

Yeah, but Microsoft Security Essentials and AVG are free and I have had no problems running their software. I hate the Symantec pricing model of paying for yearly updates. It may be great for you because you have a free copy, but for the “average” consumer in the past Symantec has been a dog and slowed down an already slow operating system. Symantec Live Update in the past was more processor intensive and a huge memory hog more than NIS itself.

I may give it a try if there is a free trial for everyone, but for new computers I have always removed it since it slows down computer bootup and performance and even then the uninstaller didn’t good a job and left a whole bunch of “stuff” on the computer and the registery. This was the case when upgrading their own products from year to year.

Why should I pay for NIS when I can get it for free elsewhere? What is the compelling sell? How does NIS compare to other products in the market. You just state they don’t compare, How? What are the performance numbers with it installed vs the competition vs not being installed? Where are your reviews of the other products you “tested”.  How did it earn 5 out of 5 stars, editor’s choice, which looks to be a marketing ploy for everything Symantec and HP on this site. What is the reference scale of this 5 out 5 rating system other than a cool graphic for a company to use in print advertising.

What is you basis other than Symantec flying you into space, which seems to be a bit bias for Quid pro Quo kind of like how Pogue and Mossberg’s involvement w/Apple. I find this “review” to be nothing more than a rafter shout for a “friend.”

Previous Symantec products leave a bad taste in one’s mouth and has to do a lot to turn most people’s impression of it. Hard numbers speak to people more than words the majority of the time especially in a review of a product people have nothing to base a purchasing decision on especially when their biggest competitors are free.

My recomendation int he past was to remove it from a new computer, but I no longer recomend that.

I understand the price might be an issue for some, but you know how many people go to best buy and staples and pay 150 dollars to wipe their system, just imagine paying half that to make sure it doesn’t get to that point.

I am certain that Nortons new products can help save someone money in the long run.

I use to use AVG all the time, and hated Norton with a passion.

Also AVG has become the bloated pig that NIS use to be.

Actually none of them work.
I remove bug infestations year round.
The problem is with the Internet Browsers.
IE8 and latest FireFox both let the bugs in.
And there in the Tray sits Norton 9, McAfee, AVG, NOD32
running while the computer is infested.
Maybe a limited user account while surfing ..
FireFox or Opera browser ..
Ccleaner temp file remover .. auto run
Save your money on Virus protection ... it’s a joke.

Symantec Endpoint Protection looks promising for small business.
It actually stopped web site bugs from coming across on a open port through the browser.

go with Norton they almost got it right this year ....
These companies are about a year behind the malware writers,
and we keep throwing money at them and get almost no protection at all.

Any chanse on getting a free license for NIS 2010? Last year you gave 5 licenses for NIS 2009 and I was one of the winners in the video contest. I was hoping there will be a similar contest this year too… smile

My kids are young right now, but I want to start saving money so they have money for college when they are grown. What types of ways could I save money for this? Are mutual funds something I could use?

Norton does make an exceptional AV product, dunno about NIS, 360, etc., since I don’t use ‘em. Anyway, neat article, thanks for the heads-up!..smile

P.S.
Look for “Box”—if you’d like to register your Norton program (hope you know what I mean, no warez listed wink).
