According tot he Associated Press the Japanese government is investigating an exploding iPod claim.
In January an iPod Nano user noticed sparks coming out of the iPod while it was being charged, Apple reported the problem to the Japanese Government in March. They believe there may be a possible defect in the lithium-ion battery in the iPod Nano, model number MA099J/A. The incident was labeled as a fire caused by the device.
Lithium-ion batteries have been the cause of many recalls over the past few years especially for notebooks. Being that this is just one incident (not aware of any others) we do not believe this will lead to a recall.
