Today AMD has announced the new Radeon ATI 5450 HD a new video card designed for those of us who want HD capabilities on our media center PC but not the noise.
The ATI HD 5450 will deliver up to 104 GigaFLOPs of computing power, will provide Windows 7 users DirectX 11 support, it will allow you to connect up to three displays, it utilizes ATIs Stream technology to reduce CPU utilization and improve video playback, ultra low power and passive cooling, and will provide Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master audio all for under $60 USD.
I personally have had the card for nearly three weeks now, and I have installed it into a media center PC.
Why did I choose the Media Center PC? Because it has passive cooling (depending on who makes the card it may have a fan but the sample AMD sent me had passive cooling) and passive cooling equals less sound coming from the system. Perfect for a media center PC in a living room where you don’t want the hummm of a fan to disturb you.
It delivered an amazing picture quality; I seriously think it made my blu-ray movies look better. Also when just watching regular television, the output to my Toshiba 42” 1080p was great.
I tried gaming with the card also, and it did play some older games pretty well at their medium to high settings, games released within the past two years such as Crysis and Dead or Alive I had to set the games on medium or low settings. You can game and average your 27 – 30 Frames Per Second but you’ll definitely have to lower the settings in the game.
I would share with you what scores I got when testing the card with 3D mark, but after receiving an email form AMD and knowing the card is a production sample I think it is wise that I omit that info for the time being.
Overall the ATI HD 5450 is a great card, perfect for the multimedia user, and great as an upgrade or a replacement card for someone who isn’t a heavy gamer especially at the $60.00 USD price tag. Also remember each manufacture will have different clock speeds etc for the card and the price may start at as little as 40 USD.
The card is available today from major retailers. For more information visit http://www.amd.com
