According to The Associated Press, today Adobe launched a public beta version of Photoshop Express, a new free web-based version of their popular image editing software, Photoshop.  The open public beta is free upon registration, and offers free 2 GB of online photo storage.

Photoshop Express is not meant to be a replacement for the full version of Photoshop.  While Photoshop is aimed more at professionals, Photoshop Express is aimed more at the general public.  It’s meant to be easier to use and easily accessible across all browsers on all platforms.  While it obviously won’t include all the features of Photoshop, Photoshop Express should be adequate for average consumers who want to do light photo editing.  I can see this becoming popular among people who like to post photos on their blogs or social networking profiles, since Photoshop Express has connections with various photo sharing sites and even Facebook.

Try it out: Adobe Photoshop Express

I thought that was what Elements was for ?

Yeah I know, but Elements sucks so was hoping for something better.

I don’t think it sucks at all. While I have the full version of PS I find that Elements takes care of my editing needs nicely. Off topic but I wish Google would grow a pair and release a version of Picasa for Macs.

Photoshop Express is meant to be a simpler, more readily available version of Photoshop for average consumers.  Adobe is partially using this as marketing and hopes that after using Photoshop Express, users who like it and want more will upgrade to Photoshop Elements or even the full version of Photoshop.

Picasa for Mac is said to be in the works and will be released sometime this year.
