Last week AMD announced it would be cutting 1,650 jobs approximately 10% of their workforce.
Well it would seem that the cutting of jobs has begun and the first cut was AMD CTO Phil Hester (prior to AMD he worked for IBM). although officially he resigned we all know after the Barcelona Debacle; his resignation letter was probably written by Hector Ruiz, or maybe not.
The Wall Street Journal (Subscription Needed) is reporting that there will be no replacement for Hester which gives the impression that this is one of the 1,650 jobs being cut at AMD and the first to go is a big one.
I spoke with AMD and this is their official comment “Phil left on his own accord and his exit is not considered part of the layoff by any means.”

Companies never lay off high ranking officers in the company, they either resign or as you said have their resignation letter written for them.
In fact where I work when you are a high ranking exec you sign both a contract to work with the company and your resignation letter when you accept the job. I would assume a lot of companies do that.
