It looks like the rumors were right; Microsoft announced in their E3 press conference that the Xbox 360’s dashboard will be getting a makeover as well as an avatar system this fall. The new dashboard interface is designed to be simpler and more streamlined than the current dashboard, replacing the current blades system with 3D slides. Microsoft is also releasing a 3D avatar system for the Xbox 360, much like the ones seen for Nintendo’s Miis and PlayStation’s Home.
The Xbox 360’s avatars will be user customizable to look how you like, and will be tied to your GamerCard. A new feature with this dashboard update includes Live Party, which will let you and up to 8 friends (represented by their avatars) create a “room” where you will be able to do things like chat, share photos, and launch directly into games as a group.
Also announced is Primetime, which will let you play games integrated with your avatar and compete for real prizes. Announced games include 1 vs 100 and Uno Rush.

I find it rather amusing that the “new” Xbox live looks about 90 degrees like the PS3’s XMB.
