Atlus USA has announced it will be releasing the USA version of Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard on June 17th, 2008.  Players who enjoyed the first dungeon crawl will be happy to know that the sequel will sport “new character classes, more fiendish FOEs, and an improved mapping system.” Read on for more details from the press release (and a video for those who are bored)!

Atlus is reuniting much of the team that was at the core of development for the first Etrian Odyssey, so the sequel’s bottom-line shouldn’t be all that different from the first game’s.  Characters will now have the opportunity to become one of twelve different classes, as opposed to nine in the original, with new skills for both these new classes and the original ones.  The game’s mapping system will also be somewhat different, which should be interesting to see because, for those who haven’t played it, the mapping system in the first Etrian Odyssey required players to basically fill in their own labyrinth maps as they explored the various twisting paths and dead-ends.  From the press release, it appears that players will now not only be able to map out the terrain they have covered, but will be able to add additional markers indicating treasures and some of the tougher enemies.  Atlus also claims there will be a brand new story and “over 100 side quests,” but I remain skeptical as to how much story a dungeon crawler is really going to have.  We’ll find out in June!  Check out Atlus’s press release at their website for the official announcement.

And now, because I can, FOE! (Yeah, it’s funnier if you played the game wink )
