It would appear that the iPhone SDK is in hot demand, as Apple today announced that since its availablity there have been over 100,000 downloads, and that is in just four days.

“Developer reaction to the iPhone SDK has been incredible with more than 100,000 downloads in the first four days,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Also, over one million people have watched the launch video on Apple.com, further demonstrating the incredible interest developers have in creating applications for the iPhone.”

The free beta iPhone SDK is available immediately worldwide and can be downloaded at developer.apple.com/iphone/program.

While I’m excited about the possibilities the SDK brings I still think there will be developers that cater exclusively to the “jailbreak” crowd. Give me a file manager, MMS app and a stand alone PDF viewer.

You think Apple would allow for an MMS app?

We’ll find out soon

I was kind of surprised that they said they would allow for a VoIP app.

But then it went on to say that only if it used WiFi and not the at&t;network.

Don’t think they can really build an MMS app unless at&t;released an API for it.

Prepare the floodgates! grin

I’m down with the standalone .PDF viewer and file manager which I’m sure are a foregone conclusion. MMS is long overdue and if it can’t be done given the SDK then Apple needs to address this on their own immediately. I’m also interested to see some games.

So how much do you think the apps will cost?

on Wed, Mar 12th, 2008 at 06:12 PM

Hopefully the apps will be free.  I mean, afterall, they are releasing the SDK for free.  So why should the apps cost money?

Should make it kinda like Linux.  :D

Because the SDK only provides the framework for creating apps. It takes time and effort (in some cases like games, a great deal of time and effort) to create the apps. They should be entitled to charge something for that. They also have to pay an annual developer fee of $99.

on Wed, Mar 12th, 2008 at 06:54 PM

yeah and apple also wants 30% of each apps revenue.

I think companies are going to charge 9.99 and up.

on Wed, Mar 12th, 2008 at 07:10 PM

Could be. I prefer my $4.99 price point but if the app is useful and coded well I would have no problem with $9.99.

I think we will see a lot of High Priced apps to test the waters and figur eout how much people are willing to pay for the apps.

IPhone on Sat, Mar 15th, 2008 at 06:03 PM

I predict they will start at 19.99, being a developer and the high fee apple is charging the company I work for wants to charge atleast 19.99.

I think 20 bucks is excessive

on Sat, Mar 15th, 2008 at 09:52 PM

Not for a game it isn’t but that would be excessive for a general utility app
