I always like getting reminded why I’ve basically stopped bothering to submit bugs to Microsoft. Namely because they’re all closed with no real feedback or reason given. They also no longer typically give real builds of the software, rather they generally do forks for major milestones so a bug you submit may have been fixed in an interim build months ago. But below has to be one of the best responses I’ve ever gotten. Doing build to build upgrades of 2008 Beta (build 7000) to RC (7100) does not work. Nor does a domain upgrade from 2008 SP2 to 2008 R2 RC work either. But instead of testing or looking at the bug I submitted instead they sent me what you see below. I just absolutely love knowing precisely where testers stand.
Hello,
Thank you for submitting your bug.
The Release Candidate Build (RC) has been released and is now available on the Connect site.
Also so many issues were fixed since build 7000 was released in January, that almost all current issues with it are either Fixed, unable to Repro or Duplicates of existing issues.
For these reasons, we are no longer accepting pre RC bugs and they will be resolved and closed.
Pre-existing bugs you have submitted are still in process, and still being investigated by the respective development teams. No issues are being ignored. Making Win 7 the best it can is our goal, and with your continued help we will achieve that!
Please download and install the RC build, and test it for your repros. If you can repro any bugs, please follow the new bug submission procedures. These are found on the Connect site and in the forums there.
The guidelines are going to be changing over the next few weeks as well, so please visit the site often to keep up to date as they will be brought up to date.
Here is a partial reprint of the email you received from us before the RC was released. More specific information is found on the Connect site:
While our testing indicates that the Release Candidate is a very solid build we ask that you be on the lookout for any issues that might remain. When filing bugs on Windows 7 RC we request that you only report the following types of issues:
Issues that prevent installation or upgrade
Any issues that involve corruption or data loss
Security issues
Regressions from Windows Vista SP1 or Windows 7 Beta (things worked before, but do not work now)
Any application or device issues that would prevent you from using Windows 7 as your primary OS.
Reproducible crashes or hangs (issues that you cannot reproduce will be captured by CEIP Telemetry)
If you would like further clarification or have a specific question, please inquire in the .Beta_Program newsgroup and the beta team will provide additional advice.
Thank you for testing Microsoft Products,
Microsoft Windows Beta Team
