Today WD announced their new MyBook 3.0 is a USB 3.0 external HDD, and guess what? For the past week and a half we have had one to play with!

The MyBook 3.0 is as stylish as any other WD external HDD, but not as cool looking as you can see from the image below. It pretty much will look good anywhere you put it.

But the look isn’t what’s so exciting about the MyBook 3.0 it’s its super fast transfer rates made possible by the USB 3.0 technology.

WD sent me the MyBook 3.0 with a USB 3.0 adapter for my system as it did not have USB 3.0, after installing it and the included drivers everything worked great. Windows 7 detected the drive and I was ready to load it with data!

The first thing I did was back up a 1TB External USB 2.0 Drive I had to the new MyBook 3.0 USB 3.0 drive. I had backed up this drive in the past to another USB 2.0 When I backed it up to a USB 2.0 drive there was 54 GB of data on the drive and it took all night I would say close to 8 hours.

The drive now had 58 GB of data on it and it took 2 hours 32 minutes to transfer. A lot faster that before.

I also had some Large HD Movie files on my hard drive that I wanted to back up. Each were 13 – 23 GB in size. It took about 2 minutes to move the file form my Hard Drive in my computer to the MyBook 3.0. It would have taken at least an hour to do that on USB 2.0.

I really am digging the super fast speed USB 3.0 can deliver and am Happy to recommend the MyBook 3.0 to everyone especially if you have large files to back up and you want to back them up quickly.

The results I got aren’t the results you may see when you get the drive, it depends on your system and what bottleneck you may have but most people with a system built within the past 2 years should see the speeds I saw.

Doesn’t USB 3.0 devices require updated hardware to run an full speed ?

USB3Guru on Tue, Jan 05th, 2010 at 02:39 PM

No an adapter placed into a proper PCI express slot is enough. Although Windows Vista and Windows 7 do not have generic drivers for USB 3.0.

Some systems may require a bios update.

Uh doesn’t that qualify as updating hardware ? Seen any Apple booths ?

Yes you need to upgrade to hardware WD sent an adapter with mines. I thought I mentioned that.

The adapter went into my PCI 1x slot. The adapter they sent me was made by MSI (not sure what model)

This is a similar card to the PCI express card that came with my MyBook 3.0

Would it possible for the USB 2.0 ports in a computer made today to be switched out to USB 3.0 ports when they are readily available?

3.0 can’t be found on any Macs but USB 2.0 is and, in theory, this drive should work on any Mac. You just don’t get the top speeds.great blog post thanks for sharing with us.
