Everyone well almost everyone has some sort of DVR device in their home, be it a TiVo or a box from your cable, FIOS, satellite provider.
While a few years ago your DVR took a while to fill up with all your recorded shows, DVRs are filling up at a records space now a day’s mainly due to HD content. Where you could store 600 1 hour long shows you can now only store 120.
Because of the growth of HD programs, I find myself having to delete programs at a faster clip. My DVR which is provided by my cable company only stores 60 hours of HD content and if I forget to delete something, I am screwed because it won’t record what I have scheduled. Even if I set it to auto delete sometimes it won’t, not sure why .
Anyway so when I got my hands on the WD My DVR Expander I was excited, I don’t own a TiVo yet (planning to get one) but my Scientific Atlanta box has an e-Sata port that I can connect an external HDD too and that is what I did with the My DVR Expander.
I expected it to be a hassle to set up but it was plug_and_play, I did need to reboot the box though.
Once I rebooted the box everything worked. I filled up the HDD on my cable box and then let the recording and viewing from the My DVR Expander begin.
I couldn’t see a difference in quality at all so I assume everything worked flawlessly.
The product worked great and as advertised, so before you upgrade your TiVo for one with a bigger hard drive, check out the WD My DVR Expander it may be cheaper than buying a new TiVo.
There is a 500 GB ($99.99) and a 1TB ($169.99) version of the My DVR Expander. For more information visit: http://www.wd.com
