I first saw a prototype of this smartphone back in September 2007, but it was over shadowed by the Blackbird, and since then I haven’t really heard much about it.

But during my trip to Berlin for Connected World 2008, I received a Prototype Review unit and I have to say for a prototype it sure as hell works as a final product, and they even made it look better. When I first saw it in September, it had square buttons that looked ok but it’s new circular buttons rock as they make navigation on the phone so much easier than what I remember.

iPaq 900 series Business MessengerOne of the biggest complaints I have with Windows Mobile, is that it’s very sluggish even on some of the fastest phones, but on the iPaq 910, I haven’t experienced any sluggishness as of yet and I am not sure if it’s because the phone is super fast (416 Mhz processor) or Windows 6.1 is less of a problem than previous versions, regardless the phone navigates through its menus and screens easily with little to no lag.

I think I already mentioned that navigation is easy, the iPaq thinks of everyone when it came to the phone. If you are use to a scroll wheel on the side for navigation there is one, if you like to use the navigation button under the screen you can do that as well, if you like a stylus or just your finger you can use those as well as the screen is a touchscreen. My sister who is a blackberry user loves the scroll wheel on the side, I personally prefer the touching of the screen.

Speaking of the screen, the screen on the iPaq 910 is a 2.46-inch transmissive TFT 65,000 color 320 x 240 pixel touch panel display with LED backlight. The colors on it are very crisp and clean. The phone also features built in wi-fi (b/g) and it’s storage is expandable with Micro SD cards up to 4 GB. The phone is a little heavier than most phones coming and HP has it’s listed weight at 5.4 ounces, however when I weighed the phone it only weighed 4.8 ounces.

The iPaq 910, comes with a built in 3.0 Megapixel Camera, which takes pretty good pictures and video. I was impressed by the quality. Click here to see a picture of my newest nephew to see. Picture and Video quality are spectacular in my opinion, especially for a smartphone.

My only complaint is the built in Multimodal GPS, it worked sometimes but not always, and I am not sure if this will be a problem in the final version of the phone as all I have is a prototype and things do tend to change.

I really liked the QWERTY keyboard on this phone, I always could find the keys. Some people in Berlin complained that the keys were too small others thought they were the perfect size so I guess it depends on who the user is.

Overall I love the phone, I think it’s fantastic and if you are looking to get a new phone or upgrade your current phone the iPaq 910 should be considered. The suggested retail price is $499 unlocked, and can be ordered at HP Shopping starting the 30th of this month.

There is no word on what carriers will have them in the US or Europe.

If I were to award the iPaq 910c one of our awards, it would definetly get a 5 Star Award, but being that I just have a prototype I think it would be unfair to award it anything as products do tend to change before the final version is released.
