For those who have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of the latest edition of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. series, the wait is finally over at midnight on Saturday, March 8th. Retailer Gamestop is kicking off the launch by hosting midnight launch “parties” and tournaments at stores around the U.S. Gamers who think they have the skills to prove themselves the best (or people just looking to experience a quick taste of the game) can participate in these tournaments, which, provided the skills are there, could have some very lucrative outcomes.
The tournaments on Saturday night will be played in the form of one-on-one elimination matches. Players will be paired up to duke it out until only one winner remains at each store, and these “District Winners” will advance to Round 2 of the tournament in approximately one week’s time. The district winners must battle their way through Rounds 2 and 3 to make it through to the Semi-Finals, at which point those 8 remaining Brawlers will be flown to San Jose to participate in the Semi-Finals.
When the dust has finally settled, the prizes are to be awarded as follows: The Grand Prize Winner will receive a Vizio 37” LCD TV, the entire First Party Nintendo Wii Software Library (in other words, all the Wii games created by Nintendo, like the Mario and Legend of Zelda franchises), a Nintendo Wii console, selected Wii accessories, and the Grand Prize trophy, all totalling in at an approximate retail value of $7,500. The second place winner will receive a $1,000 Gamestop gift card. All Semi-Finalists will receive a trophy and paid airfare, room, and board for the tournament. For additional details, you can check out all the rules and regulations at the official Gamestop website, here.
Are you feeling up to the challenge? Get out there this weekend and show everybody what you can do, then come back here and tell us about it! We’ll look forward to hearing from you.

Haha, well, if you didn’t sign up when your Gamestop first opened on Saturday morning I think it was probably a moot issue. I tried to sign up in the later afternoon and was informed that there were no slots left open.
