Today at Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany, Sony announced a new PSP model.  Set to replace the current Slim & Lite PSP (PSP-2000), the PSP-3000 will include a built-in microphone, an enhanced screen designed to reduce glare outdoors, and enhanced video out with support for interlaced TVs.  Other notable changes include a slimmer metal ring on the back of the unit (probably to reduce scratches), as well as a PlayStation logo button which replaces the Home button (probably to match the PS3 and lessen confusion with Sony’s upcoming Home service).  The PSP-3000 will go on sale October 14th in North America, and October 15th in Europe.

In North America, the PSP-3000 will be sold as a standalone Core Pack ($169.99), in the recently announced Ratchet & Clank PSP Entertainment Pack ($199.99), as well as a newly announced 4GB Memory Entertainment Pack ($199.99), which will include:PSP-3000

  • Piano Black PSP-3000
  • 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo
  • Voucher to download Everyday Shooter from the PSN

In Europe, the PSP-3000 will be sold in eight different bundles, each with a different game included.

Is it any faster or have better graphics than the older one?

They haven’t mentioned any other improvements, but who knows, it might include a faster processor or more RAM.  Most likely though, if anything, they’ve included other changes under the hood to try to stop homebrew.  We’ll have to wait and see.

How long has it been since it first came out. Isn’t it time for a newer faster better one?

The original PSP launched in 2004 for Japan and 2005 for Europe and North America.  The PSP-2000 launched in 2007.  No one knows since this is Sony’s first handheld, but there are rumors that say Sony plans to support the PSP in a ten-year cycle.

we shouldn’t see a major update concerning the graphics until 2009 or 2010

I’m thinking of getting a 3000, my 1000 just died couple days ago. Since I know I wont be buying the PSPGo, do you guys think is it more worth it to get the 2000 or the 3000? Also which one has the interlacing problem and was it a bother?
