The past couple of weeks has been really good to gamers. Many game announcements were made both at the Games Developers Conference and Sony’s Destination Playstation event. Regardless of where it came from, some big names were revealed. So now that most of that is over and done with; let’s take a look at some of the games you might have missed.

Every year, for the past ten years, at GDC there is a little event held called Independent Games Festival. It gives independent developers the opportunity to showcase their game in front of the big name game developers. It is intended to do to the game industry what festivals like the Sundance Film Festival have done for the film industry. There were quite a few games showcased this year of high quality. All the games looked really polished and professional. But most importantly they all looked unique and innovative in their own way. There were a few that really stood out to me though.

Fez : Winner of Excellence in Visual Art

The whole vibe of this game was very appealing to me from the very beginning. You play as Gomez, a 2D character who lives in a 3D world. As you can see it’s freakin’ awesome! The game revolves around the perspective changing gameplay mechanic. Rather than building the level just simply left to right like a traditional platformer, this game builds vertically. What’s great about that is, it has the familiarity of an old school platformer but offers a fresh prespective on 2D platforming.

OOKIBLOKS

There is not much I can really say about this, because there hasn’t been much information released on it yet. What’s not to love about a game that lets you take control of a monkey that bounces around and makes beats?  LOL

Synaesthete :Winner of Best Student Game

The popularity of music/rhythm games have risen in recent years thanks to the success of games such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Synaesthe is a bit different though. The game takes the player through various colorful rooms in which the player must shoot enemies by playing a rhythm game. The combination of a shooter and rhythm game takes this game to a whole different level. There is no reason not to try this game. It’s FREE!

Awesome games… got to appreciate the indie companies, since some really creative stuff emerges from them; the roots behind Portal, for example.
