Unhappy USB Device exceeding power limits

I need some help. Lately my computer has been popping up warnings saying that a "USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port". I'm not too computer literate when it comes to stuff like that. I unplugged both my printer and scanner, those were the only 2 usb devices i had plugged in. When the warning pops up it tells me to click for more info, i do, then it just says it needs to be reset and should be unplugged or something. Now, even though both are unplugged from the pc...i still get the warnings. what's the deal? I'm running a pc with xp pro. service pack 2 i believe. someone plase help!

You can ignore it. doesn't really mean anything. Pops up when there is to much power going through the USB port. But sometimes it comes up for no reason especially if you have a USB Hub connected. or a device that uses your PC power instead of its own power.

It's also a little bug in XP when the program that monitors the power is corupt. a repair install of XP might fix it.

Question Re: USB Device exceeding power limits

It was really going crazy with those warnings the other day, which is when I decided to just unplug them. I've read something about maybe using a self powere usb hub...that you plug in to the wall? would that work?

Another problem i've been having is that every once in a while, my screen will...shift...i guess that would be the right word for it. just randomly, sometimes even when it's at rest and i'm not running anything. It tends to go away after a couple minutes, just wondered if anyone knows what would cause it or how to fix it. The first time that happened was when my brother did sp2 on here and tried to install a new memory card for me. as soon as the memory card was in and he turned the pc on, the screen was all shifted and weird. any idea on that?

oh, and what's the difference between a hub and a port?

Yeah you can power the devices seperately but sometimes even using an external hub will give you the popup.

As for the screen I have that same problem too. It's your monitors firmware you have to update it.

Actually I was going to post this question too, which I found strange. This isn't my problem, but my roommate also bought the same laptop I did two weeks ago. The other day he installed Palm Desktop, Hotsync, wanting to sync his PDA and he got that message. On the otherhand, I synch my Sony Clie fine on my laptop. I didn't test his PDA on my laptop though since that would require me to install a newer version of Palm Desktop that's not compatible with my Clie.

The USB power thing is really just an annoyance.
You can disable it though just go to your device manager and expand your USB controllers Tree
Double Click your Controller. Will read something like USB 2.0 Host Controller

Go to the advanced tab and check do not show USB errors.

Only worry about the error if you are actually having trouble using your USB devices.

As for your Monitor I have a NEC one and the exact same problem. But it doesn't happena s much as it use to. I contacted NEC and they told me they were aware of the problem and working on a Fix. If you have an HP monitor my guess is HP is aware of it and will release a driver/firmware update when they fix it.
A lot of people blame the video card but I have gone through 3 of them and its the monitor not the video card.

I'm having the same problem. I'm trying to use my US Robotics Skype phone. Everything worked just fine until about 3 days ago when I started getting the message. I do what it says, plug the phone back in and the phone does not work plus the error message pops back up again. I've restored my computer to an earlier date, uninstalled and reinstalled the phone and still have the problem. Any suggestions

I never get them because I disabled the balloon popups.

But then you still have to figure out what causes it... but it won't annoy you,
