I've just spent an hour searching google for information on this but i didn't find anything helpful, hopefully someone here will be able to help me.
I'm running Windows XP Home Edition SP 1 and i was using some cheap ps2 ball mouse with a scroll wheel - which isn't made very well as the scrollwheel moves itself - but within a few weeks after starting using that mouse the mouse cursor started randomly jumping around the screen and then the mouse would just stop doing anything atall. Then i sent it back and got a replacement, that one seems to be working better but it has just recently starting jumping around, it jumps once then doesn't jump again for a while but it's still annoying. So, i decided to get a Logitech USB optical wheel mouse. optical mice are so much smoother! Anyway, shortly after starting to use this one (yes the other one has been disconnected from the computer) the mouse cursor has started jumping around the screen. 90% of the time it jumps to the bottom left corner of the screen but the other 10% it just seems to jump upwards somewhere. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the mouse and i've been through the windows XP mouse trouble shooter but that didn't help. I've read that it may be cause of the mouse mat i'm using causing a reflection so that the mouse sends a large movement to the computer? I'm going to try and eliminate this cause by using the mouse on a non reflective surface but in the mean time does anyone have even the slightest idea of what might be wrong or how to fix it or a workaround? P.S. It could be a problem with the actual mouse i know but at the end of this week i will be able to try and eliminate that cause. Thanks so much! -Darknezz |

First things first, scan your computer for Trojans, Viruses and Spyware
if it's still happening, the chances are that Windows XP installed the generic mouse driver for it, go to the manufacturer's website and get the latest drivers, install them, and then (you might of thaught that Windows would do this bit automatically by you installing the new drivers) go into Device Manager, go to the mouse Properties, Choose 'update driver" and let it search for it (the new drivers would of been installed in C:\WINDOWS\INF - where Windows searches first so it should find the new ones and install), If the drivers arn't Digitally signed, don't worry, they should still work, even if they were designed for Windows 2000. Hope this Helps ![]() |

This also happened to me. however, contrary to your advice, once I go into mouse properties in control panel, I am unable to click on update driver. Any solutions?

This has happened to me also. I will be working on an application and suddenly my mouse jumps across the screen. If I move my mouse a fraction of an inch, it rapidly moves from one end of my screen to another, It seems to always go to the start button and tries to ask me to close the current application without giving me an option to save ... as a result I lose what Im working on. Or it just crashes the current application. Ive had this problem when working on AOL, playing windows media, or developing on Visual Studio .NET. So Im not sure which application its related to. It has even trigered my anti virus to search for a virus or trojan but that returns nothing
Im not sure, but it first started the day after Sasser came out on my PC. I thought it was related, but i have all the updates, including my anti virus is fully updated. This is so annoying as its happening 20x a day |

Another thing for people to check that are having this problem if the above suggestions don't fix it is to check your mouse speed. Slow it down.

After hours trying to fix this problem, (coming here after a google search being one of them,) I finally found a solution on Microsoft.com.
I had installed a Trackman mouse a couple of weeks ago, and I didn't like it, so I took it back to the store, and replaced it with a basic microsoft wheel mouse, which immediately began acting up exactly the same way "Darknezz" described it. Microsoft KB article 321122 was the solution. You have to remove registry keys for previously installed pointers. Just removing the mouse driver that you currently have does not fix the problem. Update: I still had problems after posting this reply. I went back to the mouse properties and unchecked the box under pointer options that says, "Hide Pointer While Typing." That seems to have fixed the problem. You might want to try that first. |

If it is indeed a

If it is your cursor, then a couple causes are loose connection in wires or a dirty mouse. (I have a broken wire near the mouse and, causes intermittent connection and cursor wander)
