What do you think, we all know MS is not known for the stablest products on the market, and LH is VERY stable for Alpha/Pre-Alpha. I tend to belive that LH is a hacked version of XP Pro, just made the there and added some stuff, not a true version. But logic says otherwise, what do you think?

I dunno, lh looks pretty much like xp. I voted maybe :alien:

of course this is a real version. it's an alpha version, you can't expect it to be a complete change from xp do you?

AtomB:: No, I dont expect a total change, but I am saying this is WAY to stable for a alpha. I am trying to get a new build so we will see. cross your fingers

I would think it's based on the same code as XP, but that's about it.. still too early to tell though...

Did Windows 98 look like Windows 95? Of course...but were their differences? Of course...a new operating system does not mean a complete new look, and as we know, Longhorn is not due for at least another year, probably more.

lol what's lh? It's a figment of your imagination conjurged up by the web media.

What do you mean a hacked version of XP? Remember when XP was in it's alpha/beta stages it resembled Windows 2000 Pro. XP is essentially a step up from 2000, hence version 5.1.

Blah, but as Longhorn gets into its beta stage and progress it'll turn into a different beast... I hope Longhorn is a brand new OS though and hardly resemble it's previous ancestors. New file system :)

i've said it before and i'll say it again XP at this point in it's development was INDISTINGUISHABLE from win2k. Longhorn has an astounding amount different in it for this stage. Also it's not as stable as XP was at this stage due to those changes (anyone care to load up Neptune build 5111 to see how stable that is?)

Anyway, Longhorn is real if it's a hacked build of anything it's a hacked build of Whistler build 2250, if you look around the dll's in lh you see things that weren't in XP but were in 2250.

Its definately real and it makes me laugh to see how people can be so dumb as to doubt something they have in their hand!! LH is real people. Its only alpha so if u were expecting a lot of new stuff think again. Hacked XP...jeez get a life people. Why would someone go through all that trouble to make a version of windows that has preview panes, avalon elements, traces of palladium (network security) and some other stuff. Must be some real advanced hackers eh? Get real people

And oh also if it was fake how do u explain it using the .NET key system and only allowing 1 activation per key?

Actually XP in it's early stages resembled Neptune more than it did Win2k.:) But to stay on topic LH is most diffently real. It's just in it infancy is all. And nobody with the ammount of skill necessary to fake this would waste his/her time to make some BS, when the could be making REAL money. Even as a joke it's not funny.

@redman: and neptune was identical to 2k for essentially all intents and purposes.

and you'd be surprised how small the job market is for people who can write custom windows distro's is atm.

I was just looking at XP, Win2k, Neptune 5111 in 3 VM windows, They went to there screen savers (as they should). refreshed all three, Xp Pro naturally went it's pretty little icon log in screen, while Win2k went to its standard "locked workstation" popup. And Neptune went to what resembles closely the xp login screen. I'll agree with you that alot of the functionality and whatnot is win2k, but it seems more like a hibred of XP and Win2k than anything, even though it is a precursor to xp.

only the logon screen and the 'task view' are in neptune, rest is all pure 2k. task view is like the xp simple control panel view but it also covered help & support

how will the activation part work? You can only install it once?
that is very very serious, if that is the case, I doubt I will upgrade to LH. I'm sure though Microsoft will have a system in place.

@hypnotic: activation works the same as it did in XP. The 1 activation per key is due to longhorn's alpha state. Don't worry about it.

Longhorn is indeed for real, but then Microsoft wouldn't be too happy with you having a leaked beta. Furthermore, it screwed up my system pretty badly... :(

AlphaAlien

it isn't beta for another 6-7months

i've just run tests on it , its real , if you dig deep enough you will see that , the surface looks like a minor tweak , but just look at the install size diffrence on vanilla systems , they still have a long way to go though

k :p

their were even more changes in 3683, all the way down to ia64 and AMD64 alternate install methods

Of course it's real - check out MSDN, they have a chat transcript about the Longhorn UI. Maybe if you subscribed to BetaPlace you would know???

AlphaAlien
03-10-03, 04:54 PM
um, you can't subscribe to BetaPlace. You have to get a beta use/pass from MS which after the end of the beta brings you to just an information page.

You do however subscribe to TechNet and MSDN which do their own beta pages.

yeah I read that one, their's also talk about win2003 and longhorn interoperability somewhere on technet
