OK, first I installed XP Pro Corp w/ SP1 intergrated. I didnt install any applications, I just booted to it twice to make sure everything was good then I installed longhorn from the HD. The install was a lil shaky, I got a couple errors but it let me complete the install. I cant remember what file it logged the errors in or I would post them.

But anyway after the install was complete and longhorn goes to login, nothing happens. It just sites there. So I hit ALT-CTRL-DEL and the task manager pops up. It seems that explorer.exe didn't start. So in task manager I go to New -> New Task and try to start C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe but I get this error:

"(null) is not a valid Win32 Application."

Now, I have installed fresh 2 times and both times I got this.
Anybody have any clues as to what my problem is?

does explorer work in safe mode? Have you tried running explorer in XP compatability mode? Have you tried going into the Repair Console and manually replacing explorer with the copy from the i386 folder?

ok, I've found my problem. The explorer.ex_ that was in the i386 folder on my HD was bad. I copied the one from my cd, expanded it, put it in my windows folder and ran it. "It Works!!!"

I suppossed something went wrong when I copied them over. or mayberwhen I ran the MUI Fix. I wonder if any other files are bad. Oh well, only time will tell.
I'm just gonna extract the iso to my HD again and install again.

Thanks for your response.

OK, I'm having a problem with this mui fix.
in the batch file it has commands like
expand 31X5LC04.DLL.MU_ 31X5LC04.DLL.MUI
expand ACCESS.CPL.MU_ ACCESS.CPL.MUI
expand ACINIUPD.EXE.MU_ ACINIUPD.EXE.MUI

but I have no *.MU_ files in my i386 folder at all. So when I run the batch file it gives me the error "Can't open input file 31X5LC04.DLL.MU_" on all the files it tries to expand. And when I install longhorn I still get the error about missing *.mui files.

Have you gotten this to work?

are you sure you have no MU_'s in your i386 folder? how big was the iso you downloaded?

Heres the info on the ISO I have

filename: LH_3683_Betas.iso
size: 529 MB (555,421,696 bytes)
modified: Wednesday, November 20, 2002, 4:36:04 PM

Is this the right iso?

yes

and you installed from the HD. Make sure you have show protected files enabled and run a search in the copy of longhorn on your HD for *.MU*

OK, problem solved.
The ISO I had was somehow corrupted or something. I downloaded it again from #betas-xdcc and this one has the .MU_ files in it. I'm gonna follw that guide and install.

Thanks for the help
