hey mike ive been thinking about becoming a sys admin for some time now.
I have an as degree in computer information systems nad I also build computers and build and maintain networks on the side. What direction would I need to take, in terms of qualifications to be able to work as a system admin.
I have no work experience in this field or any other as a matter of fact.
The only reason why I chose computer programming as a major is because I wanted to learn the basics of programming such as C++ and java.
if anyone else has any info please fell free to share, Im all ears.

Well, the degree does help, but employers love experience. If it is possible, try getting an internship first (my internship was one of the major players in getting my job). Who knows, you might end up staying at that company. I also would recommend some certifications. A+ helps a little, but having an MCSE or something on that scale really seems to get thier attention (I am currently working on getting a CCNA). If you can't get a sys admin job right off the bat, try getting a customer support position at your local isp or something like that for experience. Sure, it's not the greatest, but having that position on your resume looks really good, especially next to those certifications. Also, if you know someone in a company that has a lot of computers, see if they need anyone. Knowing someone on the inside really helps more than anything. A friend of mine told me about the position I am in now (he also works at the company), right when it opened up. It took me exactly 4 hours to get this job. When you get the the interview, bring a portfolio. There are some good online resources to make one. Believe me, when I showed them mine, thier interest went through the roof (because well, even though I do have an internship on my resume, I didn't have any real job experience, so I needed all the help I could get). And lastly I will say, never give up! It took me 6 months after graduation to get a job. I hope this helps, any other questions just ask. :)
