View Full Version : How-To for making Longhorn build 3683 Faster and More Stable AlphaAlien 11-24-02, 03:01 AM In yet another HardwareGeeks exclusive we bring you this tutorial for making your copy of Longhorn as stable and fast as possible. Click Read More for the tutorial! AlphaAlien 11-24-02, 03:01 AM How to make Longhorn reasonably fast and stable First thing to do is go into %windir%\inf\sysoc.inf and do the following on all lines with the word HIDE in them: Before-TabletPC=tabletoc.dll,TabletSetupProc,Tablet.inf,HIDE,7 After-TabletPC=tabletoc.dll,TabletSetupProc,Tablet.inf,,7 Remember to keep the double comma’s then go into Control Panel\Add or Remove Programs\Add\Remove Windows Components and uncheck the following: Windows Future Storage Services Windows Automatic Updates TabletPC Components MyGames The rest are mostly up to you but make sure to keep the blank entry it’s NT Core Components, Avalon, WMI, Windows Messenger, Internet Explorer, COM+, and Distributed Transaction Coordinator. The reason you need to leave these checked is so Longhorn works, if you uncheck these Longhorn will either not work at all or will be very unstable. If you want to use Freestyle (Media Center) you’ll need a copy of XP CD2. Alright with that part done reboot and head into Explorer and turn off the preview pane (r-click\View\Preview) this is the single biggest detriment to performance in explorer. Next go into Tools\Folder Options and make sure to uncheck the following: Choose smart icon size when opening a new window (with this turned on it’ll have icons go beyond the edge of the window so you have to scroll both horizontally and vertically) Restore previous folder windows at logon. Under Managing Pairs Of Web Pages And Folders check: Show both parts but manage them individually. The rest are entirely up to you but make sure to click “Apply to all folders” before exiting this window or else it’ll only affect the current folder. The last section is Services which are located in Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools\Services (if you don’t see it you have to go into start menu properties and turn it on). This area is kind of grey since most of the options in here have to deal with each persons individual configuration, due to that I just have to say that if you don’t know what a service is leave it alone, and if it doesn’t sound like you need a service stop it and disable it so it doesn’t turn back on when you reboot. Quick Fixes To Common Longhorn Issues The Taskshelf (Sidebar) you’ll often times see the text become slightly corrupted, when you see it do this you’ll know what I mean. To fix this just click and hold the title of the shelf tile, this’ll make it redraw the tile and the text will normally look fine after this if it doesn’t just repeat. Internet Explorer in Longhorn has two missing avi file’s for downloading which cause the download crash there are two ways to fix this: 1-Cover the download window the second it pops up with another window. 2-Manually replace the avi’s using ResourceHacker. Since I use Phoenix instead of Internet Explorer this bug didn’t affect me. Start button says something else like “st” after switching themes. Sorry but the only way to fix this is rebooting. The right click menu issues haven’t been resolved. But except in the taskbar and a few drop-down menu’s these don’t seem to be particularly big problems. If anyone has more questions just post them in this thread. :) AlphaAlien 11-24-02, 04:59 AM Oops, forgot to ad this: Go into Control Panel\System\Advanced and click on Performance Settings. Uncheck the following: Animate Windows when minimizing and maximizing Fade or slide menus into view Fade or slide ToolTips into view Fade out menu items after clicking Show shadows under menus (imporant!) Show window contents while dragging (also important) Slide open combo boxes Slide taskbar buttons Smooth edges of screen fonts (last important one) Smooth-scroll list boxes the one's that aren't marked by important aren't really necessary but they will give some performance improvement. The one's marked with important will give marked performance improvements and will often times fix graphic artifacts. JK1150 11-24-02, 10:21 AM Hi, I have been having this problem where when I boot Longhorn on my laptop (test-computer) it shows the boot screen (says XP Pro) and then just a blinking _. I can get into safemode, but i have tried all ur tweaks and nothing is working. I have heard that it might be too slow (500MHz Celeron, 160MB RAM) but I have heard that people are running it on 128MB RAM and less processor speed. Any advice? (btw, I have reinstalled many times, no good) AlphaAlien 11-24-02, 11:56 AM did you get any errors during install? sounds like it's not liking one of the higher-lvl drivers that doesn't get loaded during safe mode JK1150 11-24-02, 12:05 PM No errors during install... although it installed with VGA colors, and safemode only displays 4 bit colors. I tried reloading the vid drivers, but still won't work AlphaAlien 11-24-02, 12:30 PM try using the beta DirectX9 drivers off of ATI's site those seem to be more stable than the default drivers longhorn uses and work better with DX9 than the older ati drivers JK1150 11-24-02, 12:32 PM This is on my older laptop, which has a 4MB silicon motion card integrated, not the ATI card. I will try DX9 later though AlphaAlien 11-24-02, 01:38 PM An old build of DX9 is already in longhorn, but you can't update it due to the RC0 and RC1 installers for DX9 not recognizing the windows vr. Your problem sounds to be caused by having a vid card that can't handle longhorn's higher functions. On Microsoft.com their's a document explaining the minimum graphic card requirements for longhorn. Can't find the link to it atm but just do a search for longhorn on ms's site and you should find it 3nd3r 11-24-02, 01:54 PM okay, now to find a quick server with the ISO ;) Strokemouth 11-25-02, 02:25 AM Thanks Alpha, definitely noticed some improvements! :) hot_wired13 11-25-02, 02:27 AM Originally posted by JK1150 Hi, I have been having this problem where when I boot Longhorn on my laptop (test-computer) it shows the boot screen (says XP Pro) and then just a blinking _. (btw, I have reinstalled many times, no good) ah! simple problem, but hard to solve! problem lies with monitor! its the refresh rate settings, i guess. i had the same problem with .NET and redhat linux (yes, i know its off topic, but its just an example). so... juz go into safe mode and mess with the refresh rates... should work. if it doesnt, too bad. but if im not wrong, your FIRST BOOT works, right? AlphaAlien 11-25-02, 06:53 AM Could be refresh rate. You can also try lowering the res through safe mode down to 640x480 then booting into normal mode to see what res it max's out at on longhorn Predator 11-25-02, 10:20 AM I need to get this alpha version soon :) Strokemouth 11-25-02, 02:47 PM Eh, its nothing special. It's basically XP that crashes even more. :P I'm formatting and putting XP back on tonight. Thank god for my Mac... :) Cornholio 11-25-02, 04:21 PM Originally posted by Predator I need to get this alpha version soon :) check the newsgroups :P alt.binaries.images AlphaAlien 11-25-02, 05:49 PM it's pre-alpha. I have heard that it might be too slow (500MHz Celeron, 160MB RAM) but I have heard that people are running it on 128MB RAM and less processor speed. Any advice? I recently bought an Radeon 8500LE 128MB card and I downloaded and installed the newest set of Catalyst drivers and had the same thing happen to me... with the blinkin _ and the 4 colors in safe mode. I uninstalled those drivers and went back to the ones that came on the driver CD and it works normally. I still need to do another install of XP and install the newest drivers right away instead of first installing the ones off the cd. xavier114fch 11-26-02, 10:34 PM I have performed a clean install over a previous Windows XP. It installs fine, with the normal 'colourful' install screen. I think my problem does not come from my display card. But indeed, the setup reports some files that 'do not sign properly'. LH normally boots, but when the login screen appears, it freezes when the message "Applying Computer Settings...' shows. My LH can boot into safe mode. I update my drivers and boot again, but still, freeze. Do I need another clean install? Or if i want to get rid of installing it again, how can i fix this? Maybe the sidebar. On Chi, theres mention of this among some of the microsoft designers. M3 (Milestone 3) as any milestone mark is given whenever a important change is made, or an item is successfully implemented with in the build line. The anticipation by the project people is the big milestone is the windows file system implementation. Yet I don't see that working at all in this build. Perhaps the next one 2 leak will show use more of whats behind the important M3 designation. AlphaAlien 11-26-02, 10:49 PM in 39XX WinFS is supposed to be file system option in the setup. But their are several big changes noticeable: 1-Hardware Acceleration of GUI is starting to be implemented (not active) 2-Sidebar and msstyle improvements 3-Windows XP compatability, along with some new services (MyGames, Castle) bettykelly 11-27-02, 05:57 AM any expert here ? any expert here ? AlphaAlien 11-27-02, 02:29 PM it's not a rumour I've seen it and know people who already have it. And you can essentially only install LH from HD. Start the install from windows using winnt32.exe in the i386 folder silly_walk 11-27-02, 02:50 PM Originally posted by bettykelly i insist install via HD, pls dont suggest me using burning CD, its low tech n only for those not familiar with computer tech thanks again n again What do you mean, it's low tech to install from a CD? bettykelly 11-27-02, 10:29 PM """"Start the install from windows using winnt32.exe in the i386 folder""""""""""""""" i did it everytime. thanks for advice. i repeat, it works perfect on stanalone computer. GOT problems only when dual boot or triple boot with others windows system (i installed redhat 8.0 in vmware via .net 2003 enterprise server) so i'll just try hard 2 find 3720. 15 yrs experience i felt look like a junior , poor me :-( bettykelly 11-27-02, 10:34 PM """"""""""""""it's low tech to install from a CD?""""""""" i didnt meant that, i mean copying ISO 2 CD then install will cause big trouble if u hv NTFS n FAT32 coexit, it will change yr drive letter when install. B careful, it always cause problem to auto format some dirve as i knew it happens sometime. Appreciated yr advice n sorry 4 my poor english. AlphaAlien 11-28-02, 03:56 AM whats the problem you're running into with multi-boots? I'm doing a .net, xp and longhorn tri-boot atm without a problem bettykelly 11-28-02, 08:13 AM i installed direct fr HD in xpsp1(c:), [[[[[where (d:).net no problem using this method.]]]] after it boots up, i select the preconfigured (e:) logical drive (just like the same i did while installing .net ),that cause the problems. So happen i just check that my ISO was 495MB, may be this cause the problems ???? AlphaAlien 11-28-02, 08:58 AM yes, the full iso is abour 530MB bettykelly 11-28-02, 09:36 AM thanks n i will search again OR someone b kind enough 2 email me the links privately. I promise will destroy it after use. thanks again appreciated..all the friends hv help me. Predator 11-30-02, 07:15 AM I got the M3 now :) I got a problem with the mp3, when I open a folder with mp3 the explorer locks. I heard that longhorn have a mp3 protection is it true? I also heard that longhorn will delete your mp3. AlphaAlien 11-30-02, 02:05 PM no it's not true, just people being paranoid over paladium which they don't understand Predator 11-30-02, 02:08 PM good :) AlphaAlien 11-30-02, 02:08 PM and to fix your problem just browse to that folder in taskmanager and change the view Predator 11-30-02, 02:11 PM thanks :) HeyJ 12-01-02, 05:00 PM the preview panel returns nearly every time, while i change the folder... sometimes it takes really long, if the window works again is there a way, to deaktivate this function? :( AlphaAlien 12-01-02, 05:13 PM the preview pane comes back when you turn it off in the current folder then press the back button. To stop this from happening you have to customize the explorer button bar and put the "Up 1 folder level" button back in and use that. Otherwise you have to remove avalon which kills a lot of longhorn and makes what does work, work badly. My Documents, Sidebar, new explorer components all depend on avalon. baomar 12-03-02, 11:59 PM any way to remove definitely this preview folders thing in explorer ? thanks omar AlphaAlien 12-04-02, 12:03 AM *points to previous post by himself bettykelly 12-04-02, 01:55 AM CONFIRMED silicon motion NOT work in longhorn. my 495mb ISO works in other computer (triple boot with .net n redhat 8.0) without "just a blinking _" thanks for all who 've share the experience wz me. alpha should look like alpha , right ? bettykelly 12-04-02, 01:57 AM anyway no way 2 update via official MiXXXXX site, didnt work ;-( Michael 12-04-02, 02:08 AM dont think u can betty since longhorn isnt out yet AlphaAlien 12-04-02, 03:49 PM You won't be able to update it until MS has a more public beta, which won't happen for a very long time robo2040 01-15-03, 09:16 AM Sorry i posted a question but i got the answer from a friend allready. Again sorry for the post :( Greetz Hypnotic 01-15-03, 10:14 AM What is the story I'm hearing about you can only activate longhorn once? how is that going to work? AlphaAlien 01-15-03, 06:19 PM longhorn uses up all remaining activations on a key Marcello1973 02-02-03, 01:01 PM One problem here: When editing accounts in LH 3683 i get the following error message: Error in mshta.exe: Memory could not be "read" What is it? AlphaAlien 02-02-03, 06:45 PM yeah, most people have that problem, theirs no fix for it. But to succesfully change settings you just go back and forth from a screen after settings been changed for them to stick iCeFuSiOn 02-04-03, 07:47 AM MSPAINT.EXE has the same problem; only god knows why it occurs in paint. :\ AlphaAlien 02-04-03, 04:44 PM mspaint's problem is fixable if you change the default image editor to something other than paint it seems to work fine.
