View Full Version : My computer shuts down by itself! Why!!!

Ok, it just started doing this early this morning, around maybe 1:00 AM or so. And till now, it has already happened maybe 4 times already. My computer shuts down by itself!
Originally, I was thinking that I have too many IR device (mouse, keyboard, tv tuner receiver, data IR transmitter, etc) and the keyboard's shortcut key 'power' is being interpreted by the keyboard receiver. But now to think about it, it's hardly likely.
Anyways, and it just suddenly hit me that this was the exact same thing that happened to my friend's laptop. (He went back to the store and got a new one, which the problem didn't occur anymore) I can't return my thing, it's custom built and frankly, the time I put into it... argh...
Anyways, why is it shutting down? It just happens on random times, no specific pattern, nada. It's somewhat ticking me off cuz I am queued up my ass on IRC and everytime it shuts down... well, back in line again... :(

sounds like another overheating laptop problem

Is it going through the shut down process or is it just turning off? If it's just turning off it may be a power supply problem.

nah, mine is a desktop. 420 watts turboline. I am sure it's not overheating, I have a all copper based heatsink, a ice jag fan. And to add to that, I have 4 antec blue led fans working in there.
btw, couple minutes after I posted, it shut down on me again. grrr. I am going nuts.

sorry, didn't answer the question. It is going through the shut down process. That's the retarded part, I see it auto shut down right in front of me, and I can't do anything about it.

hrmm. ok, apparently something is seriousl wrong. I have currently stopped this random shutdown crap, but the way I did it was kinda crazy :P
what I did:
went inside gpedit.msc -> computer configuraton -> windows settings -> security settings -> local policies -> user rights assignment -> shut down the system -> removed everyone from shutting down the system.
hahaha, kinda funny, but it worked. Now here's my take to why it's doing it. Since I am on a network, I think my computer is picking up or intercepting other people computer on the network's command to shut down the comp. e.g: when someone shuts down their computer, mine goes down with it.
(sounds kinda far fetched eh?)
But yeah, it's fine now... sorta.
No, not far fetched but not completely correct. Maybe someone who is mad at you? If remote access is enabled and the user has an account setup on your machine and he knows what he is doing, yes he can shut down your machine over the network. Before doing anything else to your machine, go to your SysAdmin and report to him your situation.

well, the thing is, remote access is disabled. that was one of first things I checked. and if anything, I probably know the most about computers on this floor. (though I don't remember networking for jack... lol)

no man, I ain't kidding, some of the peeps don't even know why they can't open ppt files, etc (they didn't install powerpoint)
btw, I am not ruling out, it's the fact that I monitored and checked logs and did not find any suspicious behavior... at least that I can make out.

Ok, while wer're at it. I'm having a similar problem. My computer restarts(does not display the shut down dialog). I don't know what the problem could be though... Any suggestions?

That could easily be a power supply problem. If the power is interrupted for a really short amount of time the computer may turn off and back on quickly, like a restart.
How often does it occur?

what have you done to your pc lately Kryptonic? i had similar problems when i had my memory too fast. :( i purchased 333MHz memory, but my board is unstable at that speed, had frequent resets.

I believe that to be psu too.
Btw, I did two things. I moved where my keyboard receiver was and reinstalled windows... and the problem is gone. grr... weirdness, guess I will never really know what the problem was.

I don't know, but if it the power supply what could i do to stop this? More watts power supply? I have a Asus MOBO, not sure what model, but i got a 1ghz AMD and 512 SDRAM. I haven;'t done anything to my computer, i thought maybe it could be the heat, so i am thinking of buying a fan...

maybe borrow a psu from someone first? test it out to see if that's the problem.
or if you are in US... you can always swing by your friendly Fry's and pick one up. if it's not psu, just return it. hehe

My computer just shuts down in the middle of something. Why is it doing this?

Hi Heather.
Can you tell us exactly what you were doing when it shut down, also what operating system do you have, Windows 9x or Xp and your system specs.

I am having the same issue, by reading these statements on here I would assume my PSU is going bad. I own a 3800+ dualcore system ati1900 1.5gb ddr2 xp pro
when it first did it(shut down) i assumed it was over heating, so I cleaned the processor
and put it in back with proper heat sink. Then it ran for about a day and a half
and it started acting nuts(shutting down) So I thought it was an OS error of some nature, so I installed xp pro again. during the install it would random shutdown.
And the only thing that I run on here are game servers and a TS server
and I have monitored the taskbar before and the server use maybe at most 5% of resource. So it can't be that.
Any help? thanks
