If you are like me, you may find those hoverboards annoying but at the same time getting one for Christmas is a top priority. Well if I want to continue to be a law-abiding citizen I may just have to get over it because the NYPD has confirmed that the hoverboards are illegal in NYC. What? Hoverboards illegal? Say it ain’t so.
The NYC DOT classifies the hoverboards as motor vehicles, which can not be registered by the DMV, hence making them illegal according to ABC 7 News NY.
After the news was announced earlier today, I still saw plenty of stores within Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn selling the hoverboards. So I am guessing shop owners are unaware or just don’t care. I didn’t bother to ask any if they knew of the legality or not.
I did, however, asked my friend whose daughter wants one for Christmas and she already purchased it and still plans to give it to her daughter for Christmas. I am sure the same can be said for the thousands of other people who plan to purchase one or plan to give one away for Christmas. I know I not so secretly still want mine.
I don’t know if the NYPD plans to enforce the rule, but I wouldn’t be surprised if on Christmas day people get slapped with Tickets for $500.00.
